As a college professor, I find many students have difficulty finding resources when they are asked to write an essay.  Even if they are allowed to choose their own topic, they fumble the ball when it comes to references and resources.  I suggest that if they are struggling in this area, to look online for essays of a similar topic and see if there is a bibliography or resource listing at the bottom.  Occasionally, this will guide them toward a path to finding good sources.  I tell them that I do not want to see the exact same list and that I will check the resources but there is no harm in following the lead of another writer.
