This was years after gold was first discovered in California at Sutter’s Mill but it did not fail to attract hundreds of gold seekers from across the country.Soon, the population shot to 20,000 people and the town’s merchants were made rich by those seeking their fortunes in Sonora. Many made their fortunes but few settled in Sonora. Soon after the end of the gold rush there the population began to drop and continued until today when only 8,000 people live there. Today’s residents are mainly supported by the tourist trade, which brings people to Sonora for its rich preservation of history.
