The VW Polo was originally a hatchback. The first generation Polo was a rebadged version of the Audi 50. The Polo was cheaper and much more basic than its similar Audi version. The Polo was first introduced in 1975 and produced until October of 1981. 500,000 Polos were worldwide by 1979 and selling better than the Audi 50. This first model was available with 895, 1093, and 1271 cc engines. The Polo sold so well that the Audi, which was sold alongside it, was withdrawn from production in 1978. Since then, the VW Polo has seen many face lifts to get it to where it is today.
